Excellent AV receiver, I thought Harman Kardon, but when I decide to buy this one , I am very right about it, I want it basically for view movies in my home theater, and my decision was very right, I replace my old yamaha RXV-692. The onkyo 616 was my best choice because the THX works perfectly, the sound, 7.2 and 5.2 channels effects are awesome, and the conextion with the net is very fast, the firmware up date is very fast, the odissey calibration system is the better option for calibarte your system and room enviroment. This AV works operfectly with the follow speaker equipment: 2 Studio Monitor Infinity SM225 W12" 1 channel central at the same series SM from infinity W6.25" 2 Speaker sorrounds studio monitor SM185 w6.25" 2 subwoofer, 1 JBL PB12" and 1 Polk audio PS125 12" 1 Old Rear projection screen mitsubishi 60" black diamond series The picture quality increase alot at the limits of my tv, 480i, imagin in the new ones leds flats screens. The usb works perfectly whit the ipod an iphone devices, all play list and the names of the songs you can see in the AV display or the TV screen(only with the HDMI conections-dislike-) -I bought this product because I want a very good amplifier for home tehater, and THX certify, with the middle price and very hight performance, this is the right one, the better option -I like the THX system in this product, odyssey calibration, The in/out video and audio are assignables, and can be renamed, awesome!! -I compared this one with HK 1650, and the onkyo wins for a miles away The some thing that I dislike is that the instan preview you cant see it, or doesnt work if you dont plug a HDMI outs and in, I have it conected with a video component and composite, in this way the instant preview doesnt work. Definitely the best buy at a good price without spending thousands. It is a component of good quality I have been thinking about buy another one but more powerful for a bigger home theater, may be the next TX-NR3010 almost released for onkyo instead new Yamaha RX-A2020. Thank you and good Luck!Read full review
The Onkyo TX NR616 7.2 Channel 175 Watt Receiver is a quality product of the 2012 model year. I chose this 616 model instead of buying a new 646 because the older 616 provided me with Upscaling of Composite inputs to 1080p that the New models don't provide and then outputs them thru HDMI. I utilize the Composite inputs upscaling to 1080p for my Laserdisc player. The 616's Marvell chip does a nice job of Upscaling and enhancing the Composite Video signal and then outputting it at 1080p thru an HDMI output. I It doesn't have built in Bluetooth or Wifi from the factory, but by using a USB plug in dongle that Onkyo offers - the 616 can achieve wifi connectivity for $24.99 or less. The 616 can upscale it's HDMI output to your TV's maximum achievable resolution ( up to 3840 x 2160 ). It can also "pass thru" 3D signals via it's HDMI output - but can't "pass thru" 4k signals. In short the Onkyo 616 is a quality receiver that I think you'd be pleased with - as long as you understand what it can and can't support. If Bluetooth is important to you - you won't be happy and would be better off with the new 646.Read full review

I'm using this receiver as my elevated sound system power source which is secondary to my ground level system which is powered by a Onkyo 9 and 2 reciever. I haven't actually started this system yet because I'm still working on my other similar system in my other living room. The main receiver for that one is a Onkyo tx-nr656. That was easy to set up and kicks butt. Onkyo makes a nice product. The other recievers I'm using aren't onkyos and I'm having a lot of problems with them. I might put a third tier on these systems and if I do they'll be powered by only I receivers. Thanks for onkyo

This receiver sounds, looks and works great. At least for awhile. This particular model of receiver can have 2 serious issues. First, the HDMI card goes bad and you can't get any audio out of it. Second, it will all of the sudden fail to power up properly and shut down a few seconds after turning it on which I found out can be caused by multiple things but in particular the HDMI card as well. Onkyo will only sell repair parts to authorized repair facilities, so you are stuck paying extremely high and unreasonable prices for repair of their products. Even the repair facilities will not or cannot repair the HDMI cards, so you must purchase a new one. When my first one went bad and I found all of this out, I ended up purchasing a second one with other issues for parts so I could swap them around and try to get one working unit. That too was a failure. Just an all around bad experience. Don't just take my word for it. Do your own research on this model before you decide to purchase. You'll see what I mean very quickly. Sorry to Onkyo. Always have had great products until this particular model line of receiver came out.Read full review
This product does an outstanding job for an audiophyle of many years. I desired a all-in-one system of at least 5.2 channels. The Onkyo satisfied that basic need. The installation manual is concise and well written. Installation was easily done in the den (theater) with outstanding surround sound resulting. The sound was crisp and clear with no hint of distortion into Klipsch speakers. It takes a little experimenting to understand the input selection process. Setting preset FM stations was easily done. Using Blu-ray DVDs really shows the superb attributes of the Onkyo. Onkyo isn't a well known brand however I based the purchase upon technical reviews in several magazines and I'm not disappointed. It's better than other well-known brands in cost vs performance.
I'm an audio fanatic, so when it comes to having a theater system in my house, I love having surround sound. Pairing this onkyo with a thx 7.1 onkyo speaker set, I haven't watched movies this amazing in forever. Haven't gotten around to testing out the 4k upscaling, but the audio is perfection, not to mention I can power 2 woofers. Love me some bass. I received everything that was mentioned, earlier than expected. Thank you so much.
