Collection of all four films directed by Jean Vigo. 'L'Atalante' is a 1930s French romantic drama following river barge captain Jean (Jean Daste), who marries young country girl Juliette (Dita Parlo). Juliette joins the captain on his ship, L'Atalante, but soon grows restless and wishes to see Paris. Jean acquiesces and takes her to a cabaret in Paris where a peddler makes advances to her and arouses her husband's jealousy. When she sneaks off to the city he sets sail without her and it is up to the drunken old first mate, Jules (Michel Simon), to make amends and find Juliette. Also included are the director's two documentary shorts, 'A Propos de Nice' (1930) and 'Taris' (1931), and his comedy-drama short set in an oppressive boarding school, 'Zero de Conduite' (1933).

The most acclaimed (and sentimental) film in Jean Vigo's short career. L'Atalante is the name of the barge owned by Jean (Jean Daste), who marries the lovely Juliette (Dita Parlo) at the film's beginning. Juliette comes to live aboard the barge, for Jean makes his living on the Seine. The arrival of a woman on board disrupts the small crew, but they do their best to make her welcome. The solitude and boredom soon take their toll on Juliette, so Jean brings her ashore for a night at a cafe in Paris. He becomes jealous of a flirtation between Juliette and a peddler, and when she leaves the ship again later, Jean casts off from the port.Product Identifiers
