  • Series 1 was a Disaster whilst Series 2 and 3 are Praiseworthy

These DVD's have the only surviving copies of the first 3 series (1965-68) on them. They are all in monochrome. The only episodes worth watching on them are from the 2nd and/or 3rd series - otherwise called the Birmingham years. Those are where Marker has relocated from London (where he originally set up his practice) to Birmingham. The 2 episodes from series 1 (the London years) are very poorly made - the production and casting are blundering and weak, the "characters" are shallow and off-putting, and even Marker's character is highly improbable with him even being represented as some sort of heavy at one stage. No doubt the original intention was to try to make the series hard hitting and "tough" and in that way try to prove that a "new realism" was being depicted. However, the attempt was a disaster and everything, including the plots, appear superficial and contrived. The superficial 60s in all their glory. Series 2 and 3 (the Birmingham years) are in complete contrast to this. Characters are rounded, scripts lend themselves to good acting, nuance and wit, storylines are ingeniously devised, casting is apt, and continuity, pace and editing are good. It's a shame that the missing Birmingham episodes were scrubbed. So, in brief, this DVD is worth getting, but be prepared for some awful material to begin with.
