Do yourself a favor an buy a pair from the get go. It's designed to be flexible and non restricting, so they can still work their thumbs out of it. It's better suited for the smaller kids. Bigger kids can easily figure it out. It's not 100% foolproof and some parenting is still required. Our 2 year old was able to get it off once, but hasn't since.
