I was recently travelling in China, sitting outside a bar in Beijing watching the world go by. I got into conversation with a Canadian couple who recommended this book - Midnight in Peking - as a good insight into old Beijing on the cusp of World War 2, centred around the true story of the murder of a young English woman Pamela Werner. Upon returning to the UK I bought the book. It proved to be an excellent read proving the point that the truth is stranger than fiction! One really felt for Pamela's elderly father as he tried to establish the sequence of events leading to his daughter's horrific murder and mutilation. The book also paints a vivid picture of the old foreign legation area of Beijing and its inhabitants, that would largely be swept away by wartime events and the subsequent coming to power of the communist regime. I would thoroughly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in China, or indeed the genre of crime writing.Read full review
