About this product

Product Information

Michael Winterbottom's TRISHNA, a modern retelling of Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Ubervilles, stars Frida Pinto as the title character, a young Indian woman who meets Jay (Riz Ahmed) the son of a rich real estate man. He convinces her to come work in a hotel owned by his father, and because her family is in desperate need of money - and he's charming and handsome -- she accepts. While things go well at first, she becomes pregnant and is forced to leave the job. Though she tries to make it on her own as a dancer, Jay eventually returns and attempts to sweep her of her feet again.

ReviewsFourth Row Center - TRISHNA boasts good humor and a free-wheeling spirit; Winterbottom appears to have taken its pulse from the setting and its vibrant music. The picture has a loose and open energy, and if its sad conclusion is inevitable, the journey to it is remarkably life-affirming and enjoyable., Screen Jabber - TRISHNA is a fine movie, ponderous but powerful, beautifully filmed and very evocative in bringing the subcontinent to life. It takes its time but is eminently satisfying in its own caring and thoughtful way., Total Film - TRISHNA again shows Winterbottom to be one of the few directors today who are liberated, rather than constricted, by classic literature., Sky Movies - Winterbottom's regular cinematographer Marcel Zyskind vividly captures the rich textures of contemporary India, from the worn-away wonders of its ancient sites to its dynamic 21st century cities.
