The Sennheiser HD 800 headphones are Sennheiser's flagship cans and really offer all the best qualities that come from over 60 years of sound engineering. Unlike other headphones, such as the Beyerdynamic Tesla T1, HiFiMAN HE-6, etc., which base their headphones off of a previous model, e.g. DT 880, HE-5, the HD 800s are based on a completely different driver and housing design. The construction is very high-quality, and utilizes TRS plugs for the headphone cable, enabling easy upgrades from their stock cable (albeit, it is still very high-quality). You definitely need to have an amplifier to power these properly due to their extremely high impedance (600 ohms). With the right amp, the 'bright' quality that listeners tend to criticize Sennheiser for, disappears, leaving a rich, crisp bass signature. The HD 800s also have fairly good resale value -- typically going for around $1,000+ in good condition. Potential owners need to be somewhat careful with these cans as they're prone to paint chipping, and I would not recommend them for portable use as they have a semi-open design, resulting in a fair amount of sound leakage. Overall, unless you are going for a full Stax rig or want to pay thousands for out-of-production headphones like the Audio-Technica L3000, these are the best cans out. If you want something that is more balanced and can be used primarily for portable use, the Ultrasone Edition 8 or Signature Pros are probably your best bet. I spent the last few years acquiring and testing numerous headphones both open and closed, and can say confidently that these are my favorite, both in terms of listening pleasure and overall clarity and sound quality.Read full review
HD 800 is an awesome pair of headphones. While some might say it's too expensive, but you cannot deny it's clarity. It's not a flattering headphone,so I wouldn't really suggest it for casual listening, considering its cost. A true friend of a musician, mix/mastering engineer. Ps-(a tube headphone amp would be a valuable addition)

Headphones are incredible. Described as brand new, however they do have some cosmetic flaws, great price though, im not complaining.

Pads need replacement in 3 yrs of average use once they become soft. The Super DuPont mod takes this hp to the next level. I have A/B’d the HD800 vs the HD800 with SD mod side by side. Surprisingly the $99 JDS Atom drives it amazingly well ( excellent pairing) and I have a hard time telling a German built HDVD to the JDS Atom. Add a D50s for a dac and your in sonic nirvana.

I own quite a few mid to high level headphones as well as the HD-800S . Hands down this is the most accurate and detailed set of headphones under 4K. Each headphones have their own signatures some are dark and some are bright these are just accurate . Paired with a quality amp you will hear the smallest details missed in even the most expensive speakers . I currently use wa-22 and McIntosh MHA-100 and wow I have also used a Jotunheim and was extremely impressed . I feel the HD-800 a better pair of headphones than the HD-800S and far far better than the LCD-3 . For the past 10 years every set of headphones has been compared to the HD800 and for a good reason . I feel these have gotten a bad rap with having little bass and a 6K spike because these only reproduce what is there. They don't mask 6k like others which makes me wonder what else are those other leaving out and to create bass even the experts agree it's with a price of higher distortion . I feel the hd800 require little amplification compared to other 300 ohm headphones. MY LCD-3 require as much or more power than my HE-6 and my LCD-3 are 110 ohms. I have done side by side with my HD800 vs my HD-800s using my MHA-100 and I found that my HD-800 are much better. I increase the Bass gain by as much as 5.0 db's the bass on my HD-800S start to sound muffled and distorted compared to the super clean tight aggressive bass I hear on my HD-800. So whatever Sennheiser did to increase the bass does not hold up when the bass is increased by either tone control or EQ. Also what Sennheiser did to eliminate the 6K spike also removed some of the high end crispness that the HD-800 have. I noticed this the most on Hearts crazy on you with the HD-800 I hear the smallest picking and plucking of Nancy's Guitar Greatly reduced and muffled by the HD-800S . Don't get me wrong the HD-800S is very detailed compared to other manufactures but compared to HD-800 I feel they sacrificed the accuracy detail and crispness. To gain bass the increased the distortion, to eliminate " the 6K spike " the eliminated some quality.Read full review
