Shure makes nice products and these are audiophile level headphones at below some of the crazy cost. They are excellent for modern music, rock, acoustic, etc, though perhaps not 'bass head' enough for hip hop where the bass overrules everything else. Nice sound separation (soundstage) and great on mids. Maybe not best for classical music, but for rock? They're fantastic. Well made, substantial cable and with the detachable cable, you can always replace an accidental trip or pull, especially those of us with children are grandchildren. At this price range, detachable cable is a must. Shure sells replacement cables for about $30, so there is no issue.

The 535 is a very revealing in ear monitor and/or personal headphone. At first I felt as though they may have been slightly hyped sounding but upon comparing them to various near field monitors and other headphones I discovered that what I was hearing was simply more (all round) then I had been hearing before . The mids are right there and they contain more then they did before, so upon closer inspection i would say that the response of the 535 is simply more revealing on all counts.. The removable (unpluggable) driver assembly is really a great design and will likely prolong the life of the headphones by a long way. My last personal in ear headphones were the shure 315 and in my opinion they are really a great honest headphone (though not as detailed or coveted) but their design consistently let them down, the cord broke at the driver assembly on two occasions over three years and it meant replacing the whole unit.. In closing.. Yeah they cost a lot, don't come in simple black and are a little hyped sounding/feeling at first (to the point you worry they'll fatigue your ears) but they will last much longer, are quite comfortable and unobtrusive (even under a full face helmut), are not fatiguing and they'll reveil things you never noticed before in music you've heard a million times. PS. I've even taken to double checking my highs and high mids on them before signing off on a mix, REVEALING.. :)Read full review
Same sound as 530s, but uncomfortable fit. The wires rotate and disconnect from ear bud which is cool, but the wiring system lacks the flexibility of the 530s, The wires include a semi rigid end piece that allows the wire to be wrapped around the ear. I find it inconvenient and awkward. The 530's had a short Y cable, a quick disconnect and two extensions. This model only has one wire that is a fixed length and lacks the disconnect capability if it gets caught on something. The wires are also much finer (I read less robust) than the 530s. I had the same wires for 7 years with daily usage on the 530's before losing the set. Over all, not as good as the model they replaced.
I had a pair of Westone 4R before this. It was the second pair of Westone I had that had problems (one side would go out). They would only repair it once, then offered me a discount on a new pair of W40. The Westone sounded good, but these are much better for a little more money. The Shure have a much better connection and wire system. Not as comfortable around the ear, but that's because the wire is a stronger (hoping less likely to break). As for sound, these are brighter than the the Westone. They are much clearer as well. I am hearing things I did not hear with the Westone. So far after a few hours, they are becoming broken in and sounding better and better.

They sound great and are built solidly. The cables detach right at the phones so you can get replacements if you need them, not that you would since the cable is super tough. The casing on phones seems pretty tough, I don't really see them breaking unless you stepped on them or something. It took me a few days to figure out how to wear them properly, but now they're comfortable enough that I can wear them all day without a problem. I'm not sure if I could have gotten headphones this good for less, but I still feel like these were worth the money.
Other than the 846 these are the best earbuds on the market. I've listened to them thru my 200watt Marana receiver ... no breakage on either end of frequency response range... Nothing better! Bruce

I am a drummer in a show band and I need to hear the bass and drums clearly and with accurate definition and they truly deliver. Plus when time comes for set breaks the detachable cable allows me to unplug quick. Being a musician , these earbuds are exactly what I needed .
