Here is the strong combination of Herbert von Karajan with his Berlin Philharmonic so that a fine interpretation of this Mahler Symphony is fairly assured. Not only are the orchestral sections played to the normal high standard but these are enhanced by the delightfully sung fourth movement by Edith Mathis, who appears to be somewhat of a specialist at this piece. If just the first and fourth movements of this symphony were heard, then the listener could be forgiven for thinking the work was naïve and childlike but the scary second movement soon changes that notion. There is more in this work than at first appears.
