With a run time of 13217 seconds, this studio recording presents chamber music in the Classical era, featuring the talents of the cello, violin, and viola. A must-have for classical music enthusiasts, this CD offers a high-quality listening experience of Beethoven's iconic string quartets. 3 CD Set.
Having just read Beethoven and the Spiritual path in which a detailed examination of his works comprises much of the book I was interested to hear the late quartets. According to the author these works were lost for the best part of a century and only became listened to during the mid 20th century. He says they were to advanced for the age Beethoven lived in. I was surprised when i listened to the works to recognise in them traces of Bartok and Kodaly and the folk violin of the gypsies. I don't know whether Beethoven had this in mind when he composed the pieces - he was stone deaf by that time - but i can understand that to the audience of the 19th century they would have been too futuristic to be appreciated. The Takacs quartet perform these works masterfully. I thoroughly recommend them to anyone interested in the development of western music and Beethoven's part in it.
op 132 is a desert island disc . I have until now not been a great follower of B , although I love string 4tets and Kreutzer Sonata but this chance hearing of his later string quartets was indeed a find. I am not musically knowledgeable enough to go into the intrinsic details of the works but suffice it to say they are sublime.
I have been looking to get the Late Beethoven Quartets for sometime. Finding this recording at £9.50 must be the bargain of the century! Superb recording and performances.
