Robert Simpson (1921-1997) was the best British symphonist of the post-WWII era. His 9th Symphony, whilst not "easy" listening, is his finest symphonic achievement, and the CD that is the subject of this review includes after the performance a talk by the composer on how he structured the work in terms of the tonal relationships within it. It has to be understood regarding Simpson that he stood up for tradition and tonality in an era in which it has become the acme of smartness to decry these aspects of music, and it is against this background that his work should be approached.
