In 1970, Time/life issued a vast series to commemorate Beethoven's 200th birthday. This series consisted of most of Beethoven's known works as recorded by Deutsche Grammafon and conducted by Herbert Von Karajan conducting the Berlin Philharmonic for the orchestral pieces. These CDs comprise the bulk of these recordings by Karajan. At the time, he was at the height of his conducting prowess as one of the greatest conductors of Beethoven's music, At the same time the Berlin Philharmonic had reached the pinnacle as one of the greatest orchestras of the time. The result is a superb series of recordings for the audiophile listener.
