I've had one of these for about a year and the stock mic is excellent on the unit the one issue I had was after about 6 months of use the batteries started to self-discharge over 4-5 days which got really annoying so I changed the batteries and that didn't solve it, then after another 6 months I tried to use it but again it was drained and would continue to prematurly drain the batteried after 4-5 days, I got annoyed so I measured the current during power off state and found it was consuming 7.5ma (@2.7v) which at first didn't seem like much power but over the course of 4 days would flatten the battery, so I did a bit of investigating and took the unit apart and found a RTC (Real time clock) battery embedded on the board, when I de-soldered it and tested the current draw again it measured 0.035ma which was tiny compared to the 7.5ma before, so I replaced the battery (337 rechargeable equivalent) and the current draw remained the same and the problem was solved. - edit - I have an alternate fix for the battery drain issue, batteries are completely draining after 4-5 days when just left in the device, I have done a fix whereby I remove the small RTC button cell off the main board and replace it with a 100uf 10v capacitor, this has remedied the standby drain issue although it only gives about 10 minutes before time and date is lost during a battery swap. Great piece of kit. Allows you to select recording format so youre not stuck with WMA. Good memory, but a £5 micro SD is a worthwhile addition to double up on memory.

This is a great little product that records both voice and music easily at the touch of a button. It is easy to use and there are a good number of settings to help get the best recording possible. It will record at conferences, meetings or just dictation. The computer interface is easy with plug and go. I use Dragon dictation and it is simply a case of plugging in the devise via USB then loading the audio into Your program. I had an earlier version of the Olympus and this is easier to use, has stereo microphones and does the job. I took it to a brass band practice and recorded the band without any major problem. Overall, it is a great piece of kit. Baz
