  • Excellent buy

Purchased this to replace my wife’s 80-400 which although faster, my wife found it too bulky. Good range, nice size and very manageable. Does not add too much weight to camera

  • Good alrounder that will please most

I have read a lot of reviews on this lens before taking the plunge and buying it, and is it as good as claimed by other reviews, well read on to find out. The Nikon 18-200mm VR DX has been around for 10 years yet it is still in demand, well was I blown away with the performance of this lens? Well no !, I have been using a third party brand of pro quality so I has trying to compare with these lenses, then I reckoned it was not aimed at the pro marked but more the enthusiast lens, at first my images lacked sharpness, but then I stopped down to f8 and then the images were crisp, but if I am going to do a lot of wide or long shots then I resort to my pro lenses. Pros; A one lens solution for almost all photography Less to carry around Used right can produce sharp images Metal mount 2 VR settings Close focus, but not true Macro Cons; The barrels as sideways play in it Zoom creep Short travel focus ring Not sharp at wide and telephoto Distortion at both wide and telephoto Conclusion; While the overall design, ease of use are good Nikon in order to keep weight down and price attractive then the build quality is not has good as I would have liked, just don't knock or drop this lens then it will serve you well for years, the VR system works well and if you want sharp images stop down to f8 or less, but I was surprised that I could focus as close as 12" at any zoom position, colours seem very accurite so no complaints there, and with smaller f stops it is trickier to blur backgrounds.
