Matthew Rhys stars as inexperienced schoolmaster John Standing, who is conned into taking on another identity, in this lavish adaptation of the Daphne du Maurier novel THE SCAPEGOAT. After being wined and dined by his charismatic lookalike Johnny Spence, Standing wakes up worse for wear and is sucked into the life of the mysterious stranger. Now suddenly responsible for a crumbling stately home and an even more crumbling family, he has to deal with a drug-taking mother, a hysterical wife and two mistresses - one of whom is married to his 'brother'. In addition to Rhys taking on the dual roles of Standing and Spence, the impressive cast includes Dame Eileen Atkins and Sheridan Smith.

Promising start
Don't know if this followed the original story very closely, but is a typical modern, formula movie - underdog failed teacher gets in with a hopeless load of toffs and, turning out to be a genius, saves their bacon and gets the lady. Needed better characterisation, A bit of a yawn.
