This is a professional quality, sturdy laptop and even the lowest speed CPU's seem quick - though you will only get a couple of hours out of the battery. There is no webcam built in. I bought this one for my wife to replace a nearly new netbook which was so slow it was useless, and she uses it mainly for Facebook, Games, Email and Skype using a usb webcam. It runs Windows 7 though Dell doesn't support it and there have been no problem with drivers -I'm sure it would run Windows 8 if preferred. I also bought a D630 for my son and there wasn't much difference as this model had the improved screen as in the 630.

The unit is in excellent condition and, apart from a slight problem fitting the SSD into the slot, which took probably a whole minute to solve (this is a replacement while I solve why my original and much loved D620 isn't working). I just have to replace the Broadcom wifi board - too much effort to sort out the drivers in Xubuntu - with an Intel one - which runs immediately without all the fuss - and put the 4 GB of memory in and we'll be away! I really like this laptop and originally acquired one by accident. When it suddenly failed, I tried replacing mobo, HDD, memory and keyboard, without solving the problem, so decided to buy another, rather than a modern machine, which I'd have to be more careful with (I build and rebuild old laptops for fun). I can't really tell what I like and dislike about the machine. It's very idiosyncratic but this machine simply suits my style. We have another Dell laptop, an Inspiron 1520, which somehow doesn't do it for me at all!? It arrived the day before the delivery had orginally been promised. It had been well packed and is beautifully clean and tidy. I'd give it 6 stars if I could. I recommend this to anyone as nutty as me, without qualification.Read full review
Just a personal view which may differ from others experiences. This era of machines (ours turned out to be a 630 with wider?screen) seem to be coming to the end of their first lives and are now trickling fast into their second lives as domestic and backup laptops. I like Dells on the whole because they seem pretty tough and generally reliable - their extensive use in schools seems to back this up - and cheap used spares are becoming readily available. I've found the basic spec sometimes a little too low with some, but extra memory and possibly faster processors can often be fitted to advantage I've found. Ours used XP pro with no issues other than sorting out the system drivers (we had to manually download them but once installed all was well) and with the required added memory, seems to cope well with Vista, although by modern standards it's a bit slow. One final thing - the sound on these Dells is usually pretty good too and the graphics fine for all but advanced gaming, which I doubt you'd ever use these things for anyway.. For the general domestic surfing and office work we do at home and using Windows XP SP3, these machines are excellent in my opinion and there are now more of them coming to market, which will bring prices down a bit. The fact that they can be upgraded to Vista and Windows 7 should see them in use for a number of years yet I think as well.Read full review
I bought this PC because I have had a similar model before (D830) and the fact it had XP and a serial port, which I needed to program equipment. Has performed perfectly and for a used laptop the battery is still good for a couple of hours. Previous owner had re installed windows and put on office so that was a bonus.
