    Katsu 936 digital solder station

I was after a soldering iron after my old maplins one burned out. I had looked at a lot of reviews before choosing this one. The review I saw on a well known video site, made my mind up. Priced at the budget end of the market, it has great features. The warm up time is really quick, and when warmed up you can adjust the temperature up or down by using the 2 buttons. There is even the option to calibrate the temperature by means of the buttons, if that is more critical for the work you are doing. It comes with an iron stand which is big enough to store spare tips, or even stuff a tip cleaner in the back. The tips are easily available on eBay, with a full range of types to choose from. The iron comes with a pointed tip, useful for small circuit work with small components and pads. I bought a 3mm chisel point to carry more heat on larger jobs. Replacement complete irons that plug straight in at the front of the unit are available for a few pounds, or the internals. If I were to be really critical, there would be 2 things I would say. Firstly, there is a little bit of transformer hum. And secondly, the iron holder is a bit light. Neither of these affect the operation of the unit, as I usually have the radio on, and the stand can be weighed down, or rubber/felt put on the base of the stand. Great value and a useful competent unit which is fully serviceable when the time comes.

  • Most critical review

    Very inaccurate temperature display.

You will need a soldering iron tip temperature gauge for this device. The iron tip of the one I received was actually 60 degC higher than that displayed. There is a 50degC calibration limit so even when calibrated by -50degC the tipis still 10degC higher than the display. The unit with a rotary temoperature adjustment is far more accurate. It is a good soldering station as long as the iron's actual tip temperature is known. A suitable adjustment may then be made to allow for any discrepancy. A nice flexible cable for the iron of a reasonable length is included.

  • No Humming and Fast Heat Up.

This Katsu Soldering Iron is very good value for the price I paid. I have use it several times and so far I am very pleased with it. Although it was listed as a Re-Work station it is only a Temperature controlled Iron not really what I would consider is a Re-Work station which usually has a Hot Air Facility but I knew that before purchasing. I also purchased a better quality Stand for the Iron as I did not like the one supplied, it is functional but I wanted something a little better. I would also recommend that you get some spare Tips for the iron as they do not last very long before they start to deteriorate. Having said that if you only solder occasionally then that will not be such a problem. All in all I would recommend this and I would purchase this again should the need arise.

  • Excellent, but tips coarse and temperature inaccurate

A very good soldering iron, well thought out. Only three drawbacks- tips too coarse for surface mount work (and no fine ones apparently available), the temperature setting is 50 degrees or so out (the tip is too hot), and no auto shut down. Which last one may expect to pay a lot more for.

  • Neat bit of kit.

Very nice soldering station, as everything you need including a good selection of different tips and is easy to set up. The soldering iron is very comfortable to use and heats very quickly and stays at the set temperature virtually all the time with no variation at all. The quality is excellent for the money and I cannot fault it in any way.

  • Excellent value Solder Station

Great quality temperature control soldering rework station. Overall the build is superb and the solder wand is comfortable to use. Base unit power cord is thick and good quality and the plastic casing seems tough and durable. Din connector to wand is a lttle stiff at first but with use will loosen up. LED temperature readout is clear. Gets up to 250° s within a minute so is quick to heat the iron. Only critisism is it's a little difficult to screw the collar back onto the wand after changing tips, i think this is due to the outer sleeve being a little short. 4 tips are provided, 2x points, 1x small chisel and 1 large beveled edge tip. Temp setting is simply by pushing / holding up or down arrow. Calibration -50 +50° is available too. Great solder station for the price, highly recommended.

  • Mostly good

The unit is neat and tidy, works well apart from the temperature offset! the indicated temp was 350 deg C the actual measured was 410 deg C tried to offset by 60 deg but the unit only does an offset of 50 deg so it gives a false reading of 10 deg other than that I am very happy with the Katsu

  • It's good but

I bought this after watching bigclive on YouTube so new what to expect. But on that when I checked the temperature it was 72 degrees higher than what was on the screen. I used a hakko 191 Tester so I can keep track. If you are keen but want low budget you need to get the hakko as well as this soldering station

  • Good value

Correctly fused plug, safely earthed. Quick to heat up and a selection of tips, it definitely better than my old non-temperature controlled iron. Ideal for the hobbyist and occasional user whilst still being capable of a wide range of jobs.

  • Great Bargain for the Hobbyist

A solder station for the price of an iron. As recommended by 'big clive ' on youtube I liked these so much I bought two. So cheap you don't even have to think about replacing the wand if it breaks. Yet it has a quality feel with it's digital display and it performs very well.
