  • Bachmann EMC Gas Electric Doodlebug issues

The unit I ordered was not what I received. However, after a brief test I decided to keep it anyway and was glad. Good gears on these units are rare. The vendor offered an exchange but I declined for that reason alone. The unit had no cracked gears and ran smoothly but was very noisy. Upon disassembly I found the copper motor brush contacts were rubbing the inside of the body transmitting every vibration and motor sound. These I bent inward at an angle out of the way. Then I noticed one of the diodes for the light on the circuit board were interfering with the body shell cross brace. I had no choice but to trim the brace to clear the diode to avoid further teardown, re-soldering and reassembly. More running noise gone. The back coupler drooped so much it failed to engage with a Kadee coupler gauge. I inserted a grey Kadee washer between the screw and the lever on top to remove slack and that improved the mechanism greatly but not 100%. Lastly, the front dummy coupler in the cow catcher was glued incorrectly forcing it to point to the sky. I bent it down slowly with heat to realign it vertically. These were all likely quality problems at assembly at the factory, not my vendor issues. The unit was indeed new as he advertised but the box of course had been opened. Now it runs almost perfectly silently on a par with my most silent engines. These mods (see pics) turned a problematic item with a bad reputation into a beautiful runner. Looking for another one at a reasonable price.
