An iPhone records better than this item
I bought this recorder thinking that I was purchasing a product that would give me crystal clear, broadcast quality sound. Previously, I have been using an Olympus WS-825, and was having some quality issues. I bought a better mic for it, and it was still OK. So, with my purchase of this product, I was in hopes that the quality would be outstanding! Was I ever wrong! There is a background noise when I record that is screechy and distorted. It is really distracting! I was highly disappointed, and wish I could return the item--but it was an open box item so, I have no recourse but to keep it. What I did instead was to plug the quality microphone into my iPhone 8+, and use the voice memos app to record. Quality? YES. Distortion? NO. Easy To Use Recorder.
I bought this for simple recording tasks. Mostly for electric guitar riffs and songs. The best thing about this model is the ease of use. You can easily record, delete, overwrite. I give it 4stars for my needs. It has a good owner's manual, and even without that it doesn't take much time to figure out how to use it effectively. The 16GB card that came with it provides more than enough space for me. The sound during playback is pretty low. I plan on hooking up to a pc anyway so that's not a big issue. A little recorder packed with very powerful features.
You can accomplish many recording projects with this recorder. It is important to update the FIRMWARE to 2.50 as soon as you possibly can and make all the settings to get optimal recordings and playback sounds from this unit. So far I have purchased a total of five of the TASCAM DR-05. I paid a little over $50 for the first unit and $32 for the other four units. All five units work very well and have 32GB SDCARDS installed.

Great If The Settings Are Just Right Otherwise Not So Much
