Superbly produced. Will be a classic one day.
I purchased this Album following a recommendation from a friend of mine. WOW ! The lead singer has a terrific voice and the drummer is handy. There have been comparisons (in the press) to the one and only Led Zeppelin and I can hear why that comparison has been made with the Rock/Country/Blues style, however, I feel that this band can stand on its own merits, they are certainly a talented outfit. Rock guilty pleasure that quickly grows tiresome-buy “gardens gate” first.
Effectively the the “first” Greta van fleet “album” for the masses as the ep prior seems to be a limited pressing, hard to obtain and pricey. I decided on a whim to get tickets to see them live andI bought all three albums in a rush to gen up ahead of the gig. This was actually the last I bought. Usually, early/first albums often are the one to have, I’d sought out all the tracks individually on YouTube and it seemed very catchy, I found myself humming and wanting to listen again but I have to say I’ve quickly become disillusioned with around 50% of it quickly. The band take a lot of stick for being verbatim led zeppelin copies and you can certainly see it strongly on this offering. The lead singer uses some phrasing that is undeniably Robert plant’s own. To be fair they were very young when this came out, they clearly love what is a sound from another time and can reproduce it well, they just got on with releasing homages/pastiches rather than spending time hidden away crafting something markedly different. As an approach it’s certainly not done them any favours in the press. It must be said a section of public, myself amongst them, yearn to hear more from led zeppelin and there’s never going to be any new material or live performances from them in future, there’s definitely a market. All that said I find the biggest hits here grating, especially as an older listener it just seems a bit like “dad rock” with all the “whoa mama” I feel embarrassed listening to it. Some lines just seem appallingly obvious/lazy in their rhymes “every day is a new day, every day is a new way” ?? On a positive note where the writing still needs work lyrically the music makes up for it..there’s a lot of catchy tunes and great/easy to follow riffs but it’s hard to enjoy this whilst zoning out the ridiculous vocals. Over time I actually find myself drawn to the covers on this album and “talk on the street” something about this track just works..the lyrics are bearable and choppy guitars are enjoyable. Looking at them body of their work so far I find Greta van fleet are getting better with each new release..currently I’ve listened to battle at gardens gate a lot and I find it a grower, this is the album I’d recommend buying it seems the music is more introspective, thoughtful and less obviously a retro remake (later black sabbath vibe??) keyboards are coming in much more the lyrics now becoming more interesting, more relevant, touching issues like sexual diversity/inclusivity or environmental anxiety/societal collapse rather than days of olde/wizards and the lead is developing a style that is no longer apeing plant, I feel he may actually have a more powerful voice(!!) and does some great vocal acrobatics I’ve not experienced before..starting from now..they could become something great and new/refreshing/original..in what is quite a unprogressive genre. if they could start from now..Much work will be needed to recoup integrity 3 albums in. and of course If you are one of the many who struggles with unashamed “hard rock” vocals as many do..it could well not be a journey to join, it’s probably never going to be cool..it’s not smooth r&b for sure..I do check myself externally thinking “can you really be liking this?? Isn’t this Ronnie James Dio in a new cloak??” I get the same feelings of shame listening to wolf mother.. I like it..but it’s kinda wrong to! and there is definitely a little Noddy Holder in there ..which can be disconcerting..it’s a marmite thing..but I can’t deny I’m closer to team “love it” In short I just think they perhaps hobbled themselves putting out two albums as relative kids which sound a bit “spinal tap” silly..if I was them I think I’d be wanting to be known for what I’m doing now..and keep these skeletons in the closet!Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned

Somewhat disappointing
Purchased this on the back of numerous reviews elsewhere. I must say I'm a little underwhelmed. The similarity to Led Zep's style I'd undeniable. However, where Zep were varied and inventive this band is rather a one trick pony.
