  • Hefty Tome with plenty of good pictures

This book arrived from the eBay seller promptly and in good condition as described, and at a very reasonable price. No complaints there. As a book, you’d have to say that anyone calling their book a “definitive visual guide” to art is asking to be shot at. It is not a bad starting place for an art student or student of art history. It’s a huge unit, heavy and has many, many images. A visual treat. And the accompanying text is interesting to read. However despite making fairly sketchy attempts to cover the art of different cultures it remains mainly a book about “mainstream” (ie European, white) art. The one thing that I would actually complain about, is that a large number, if not all, of the prints “shave off” the edges of the original art works. It is pretty insignificant in most cases but not all. For instance, in the print of “Meerestille” by Böcklin, the bottom of the picture is missing the dead body in the water beneath the smiling mermaid - in other words the “point” of the painting is missing. This is a glaring example that made me notice the same “shaving” in other images. But the book remains overall rather a fine thing and I am glad I bought it.
