A 0.5mm tip is too small for general use.
At 0.5mm diameter the ball is too small for general longhand writing which looks spidery and untidy. second annoyance is that the gel ink dries on the tip to form a smudgy blob when you resume. The drying is rapid and does mean that the tip has to be wiped with a tissue before writing further, it is rather similar to a quill pen in this regard.
