  • Cheap performance

Take an old desktop, it was a gaming platform back in the era when the GTX1060 was a top tier graphics card in 2016 - 2017 !! The old AMD 4 core phenom was getting a bit old and comparitively slow but still very functional, and it worked away more as productivity / multimedia platform until the graphics card failed. Rather than scrap the PC I 'upgraded' the GPU to a slightly newer GTX1660 Super, still used in thousands of PCs (see the steam GPU review), which in the current wierd GPU market still buys reasonable performance from a 2019 released device. At this point I thought lets give the PC a bit more of a boost as it was increasingly getting a bit pulled down by the CPU so it's off to e-bay to look for CPU's. When I built this box over 10 years ago I left the potential to upgrade the CPU all the way up to the 8 core bulldozer line, how I lusted after them back then. Unfortunately they still command, for old silicon, relatively high prices so I looked for one of the 6 core black editions. BINGO! We have a 1090T Black for the princely sum of £45. Six cores running at 3.2 GHz and the dynamics see three of these running at 3.6 under load, overall as fast i7 920 'Nehalem' core. Of course it's a black edition so the multipliers are unlocked which means overclock time. It took a day or so to run through a few different permutations to get a fast stable setting running on a 225MHz Bus and 17.5x multiplier, for a maximum CPU overclock to 4.025 GHz that's on air watercooling might allow 4.2. So the message has to be IF you want to make an old PC faster go for it, IF you have an old AMD 890 AM3 board the the 1090T or 1100T CPU's will give you a huge boost stock and have the overhead to go faster still with very little effort. Like my old PC, yours can really cheaply become better specified than the average used by current Steams users. Phenom 1090T love these old CPU's :)

  • 3 Core - 6 Core Upgrade *Worthy Choice*

This processor may be a bit dated but still seems to do the job just fine, the one I acquired was preowned as was my last AMD CPU, which was a Phenom II 720 X3 2.8Ghz. Upgrading finally to the X6 1090T was a good choice. Everything is snappier and runs consistently on most applications and games. As this was the best CPU my motherboard could take without upgrading my whole PC. Being automatically overclocked to 3.6 rather than the stated factory clock of 3.2 was a surprise to me when delving into the details of the CPU. My only niggle with installation and running of the CPU was my motherboard didn't have compatible BIOS software which was a concern when attempting to plug and play resulted in non boot. In the end it was a new lesson to me and after a bit of research I was able to update to a new BIOS and get to testing what this little puppy had in comparison. Pricing was fair for what it has to offer and a great all round CPU for today's current market.

  • A good CPU, fast for its age.

This was a secondhand CPU, one of the fastest my old motherboard would take. It arrived on time, well packaged. A CPU either works or it doesn't and this one works fine, improving the benchmark score on my old CPU by about 30%
