The Oppo BDP-103 is admittedly a pretty cool machine. It plays pretty much every type of media except 4k UHD, including SACD and DVDA, and has RCA outs for individual channels. This makes it appealing to music collectors, and its solid build means it should last awhile. Menus are easy to navigate, 3D easier to get going than some players, and it converts 2D to 3D well if not amazingly. On the downside, it won't play anything other than r1 BD without a soft or hardware mod. Top menu doesn't work. Oppos kind of built a reputation on "playing everything", and I guess earlier models did right out of the box, but not the BDP-103 (or later). It's easy to mod it to play all region DVDs (for free, google Oppo superdisc), but you can only BD region 1 without a mod. In fact, the Oppo BDP-103 is one the most region locked players out there in terms of BD. Once modded they play, and modding it is pretty easy as of this writing with modifications currently available on the net. But you will need to factor in paying extra for the mod if you want it to play all region BD. Video-wise it performs well, though there are newer machines that do a better job converting DVD to 4K. Up-conversion of DVD is only very good (at best). It still looks decent, but my Panasonic UB900 converts DVD to 4K so well I don't necessarily feel the need to upgrade to BD where it's an option. This is definitely not the case with the 103. It's still a great 1080p machine with excellent features, but if you don't need the audio or 3D bells and whistles, you may want to try a newer, likely cheaper machine. I do not have the 103D, so I can't speak to how Darbee performs. Lack of UHD, DVD up-conversion and region locked Blu Ray without modification are its weak spots. Audio options, performance, and 3D are where it shines.Read full review

This oppo has great features and it's easy to use. 7.1 audio out and 2 hdmi inputs + 2hdmi outputs means you can use the oppo without a receiver. I'm using it with an external power amplifier and my system sounds and looks great. the Audio controls are great as you can configure the crossover frequency, distance, and trim for each speaker. It's very fast when switching between apps and inputs. Very easy to use interface. The only caveat is I wish it had Bluetooth built in but it doesn't. Still a 5/5 product in my book.

The durable build quality I noticed immediately. All metal chassis/casing. Gold plated very strong RCA jacks. All digital hacks seem very solid, as are the buttons on the face of the unit. This plays SACD, DVD-Audio & HDCD and can send the audio via HDMI or analogue outs(RCA). I own a Sony, Pioneer Elite, and Samsung BDP yet I swear this Oppo sounds better on all my discs and I have an ample collection of hi-res music discs. I don't have multi-channel RCA inputs on my Yamaha A730 so I listen via HDMI mostly though I do have stereo analogue lines hooked into my Audio 1 input from the Oppo. I wouldn't say the built in DACs are better than the Yamaha's(Burr-Brown) but I like having the option for 2-channel sources. It also gives me the advantage of utilizing the various sound fields of the Yami that are disabled via HDMI when playing hi-res discs with ultra high sampling rates like 192hz. I love listening to 2-channel studio music in "7-Channel Stereo" mode. Image quality is spectacular and DVD up-conversion is stellar, best I've ever seen. Makes me wonder how good the Darby version is. I'm content with this ordinary 103 for video. I bought it mainly for music. That said now I really want the 105(or 205) for its superior Sabre DACs even though they would only come into play for stereo(not multi-channel) on my current AVR. I will eventually upgrade my AVR to a top-line or near top-line Yamaha Aventage(which also use Sabre DACs) or Marantz, or possibly Sony ES. Overall this Oppo 103 is a top notch BDP and worth for me every penny I paid. I do not yet own a 4k tv so not certain on its 4k conversion but I would expect it to be fine. My TV is a 55" Panasonic 530U(1080p, true 120hz refresh w/ 240 backlight blinking and true film cadence capability). I did test the DVD 24p conversion and it worked with both HDMI outs. I turned it off because most of my DVDs are music not shot at 24p. The 24p for blu~ray is stellar. This thing gets video right and sounds better than any other BDP I've ever heard. Read full review

I'm very happy with my purchase of the Oppo 103! It has fantastic image quality for DVD and online streaming (through Chromecast plugged into HDMI input), and blu-ray playback is on par with anything else I've seen. Haven't tried the 4k upconversion or 3D playback yet - I'm using a 1080p TV without 3D. This player replaced my old audio processor, which could no longer handle the HD audio on newer blu-rays, and my old Panasonic blu-ray player (which was great, but the Oppo is better for DVD). I use the Oppo to decode audio to 5.1 analog and pass the signal to two power amps. There is a bit of noise (hissing) that is slightly audible in quieter passages so it's not an audiophile setup by any means, but it's good enough for me. The Oppo includes basic bass management (speaker size, crossover, distance) but no on board equalizer or room correction.Read full review

If you're looking for a high quality blu-ray player (not UHD/4K), Oppo is the brand to be looking at. The 103 is a solid performer. Fast, well-built, outstanding image and included features. This is top notch, along with Oppo's support. They're still releasing firmware updates for this player, making it better, even after several years on the market and a new line of players above it. I had a Darbee unit already, so I didn't need the 103D. I planned on using HDMI, so didn't need the 105 (for it's superior analog output section).
