  • Good for basic Final Cut Pro X video edit system if upgraded to 16 GB RAM

I'm a video enthusiast, not a fulltime editor. I prefer this 2012 version of the Mac Mini over the latest 2014 version because the latter has to be ordered with 16MB RAM included. You cannot add RAM later, nor does the 2014 version have a Firewire port for my older peripherals. This 2012 Mac Mini i7 has HDMI output to my large HDTV display, four USB 3.0 ports backward compatible with USB 2.0, SDXC flash card slot for media import, and I can still use my Firewire 800 external 4TB HD to archive my files and projects, plus I added a bargain new Thunderbolt 8TB RAID 1 external HD to edit AVCHD video clips quite speedily. It does slow down when processing Motion 5 special effects, but not to the point I would spend $10K for a new Mac Pro or $4K iMac Retina.

  • Last Known Good model of the Mac Mini

Although it has a spinny disc by default so is rather sluggish on disc-bound operations by SSD standards, it's a solid machine with a reasonable balance of internal components and, most of all, the ability to upgrade them relatively easily. No soldered-on RAM or unusual/possibly proprietary SSD blades to be found here. The port arrangement is also good, with forward-facing for its time Thunderbolt 1 and USB 3.0, but backed up by legacy FireWire, Gigabit ethernet and HDMI to complement display out over Thunderbolt if needed. In use it is close to silent - the HDD and fan are inaudible in normal use. Especially good for an HTPC / NAS hub, but obviously a very expensive if you're going to use it just for that.

  • Best Mac Mini

This is the best performing Mac computer in this very compact form factor. Newer Mac Minis are underpowered compared to this 2.6 GHz 4-core i7. Plus it has extensive I/O options, including 3 USB 3.0 ports, Thunderbolt, SD card slot, HDMI, Ethernet, digital audio output... Makes a great media server, database server, and with SSD drives it's quick enough for video editing. Great little box.

  • Mac mini late 2014

A good, small, fast desktop. At this price it is perfect for a home entertainment center. Has all the inputs you could possibly want, plus Bluetooth and a built-in wifi card. You can also add or change hard drives or memory to this model, if desired. Thus far, this is the last Mini that permits it those kinds of modifications.

  • Want a fantastic Mac, but can't afford a new one? This is a great option.

I've always been a "Mac guy", but it's been a while since I had one. I recently purchased this 2012 Mac Mini server to replace a 2011 Windows 7 machine, and I'm never looking back. I use this for professional grade audio recording and editing, and I have to say that this Mac is easily 4x faster than the Quad core AMD processor PC it replaced. The i7 Quad core processor in this Mac Mini is smoking fast without the high price tag of a "new" Mac, and incidentally, it's faster than new Macs too, since it's a Quad core rather than just a dual core. Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 connectors let me hook up all sorts of peripherals, including my MOTU 1248 audio interface and external hard drives. Additionally, it's great that you can upgrade this Mini in the future, with either more RAM (although this one is maxed out at 16 Gb), or a larger (or dual) internal hard drives. 2013 and newer Mac Minis cannot be upgraded in this manner, which means you have to buy them fully loaded, which costs a considerable amount more than getting a 2012 Mac Mini. Overall, I'm thoroughly satisfied with this machine, even though it's 5 years old. Until I can get a 8 core Mac Pro for this kind of money, I'll be using this Mac Mini for recording and editing.

  • Easy, Fast, and SILENT

This configuration is quiet and fast! Setup was a breeze and the system meets my needs as a developer and more. Originally purchased to pursue iOS development I am switching to using it as my workstation. Working without computer hardware noise is nice. Built on a Unix core OS X is familiar. I spent very little time setting up and had absolutely no configuration issues. I was able to build out a developer's environment quickly. In less than a day I had build out my first iPhone app and ran up an Android application. This is a great developer's workstation for iOS and Android applications. For graphics or large data work you would need to consider adding another HD. Cloud storage options diminish this weakness. Using Bluetooth technology eliminates wires and with built-in WiFi the Mac mini is ready to connect. A standard HDMI port allows you to connect most any monitor. For a second monitor the thunderbolt port is easily converted to HDMI or DVI if you don't have an Apple thunderbolt display. Works fine with bluetooth, USB, or dongle keyboard and mice. PROs: Quiet, Fast, connected Works great with non-Apple peripherals Well supported CONs: Limited space: 128GB SSD [easily overcome]

  • Easy to upgrade and is still a mini powerhouse in 2021!

With the additions of an SSD and 16gb of DDR3 RAM, the late 2012 Mac mini is able to keep up with modern applications and runs Catalina fine. I use mine exclusively for music production and virtual synthesizers (Logic Pro X, Reason, etc.). It is part of my portable rig and is ideal for my setup.

  • Aging but solid Mac model

Despite its age the 2012 Mac Mini is a solid computer, when equipped with an SSD hard drive and 16 GB of memory. Just be advised that it wasn’t designed to work with modern 4K displays. 1080p displays are fine, and so are Apple Thunderbolt displays, if you can find one.

  • Been wanting one for years

When the Mini came out, it looked like an excellent solution for someone who doesn't need a laptop, ore already a desktop, perhaps with a KVM to allow switching among them. This unit is extremely compact, low-energy, quiet, and was awesomely capable at the time. This is the last one with an optical drive; I need to research whether the next two models have empty drive bays (after 2014, the expansion capabilities of 2010-2012 were taken out of the unit). This model can be expanded to 8 or 16 GB RAM, and the HD is relatively easily accessible. I would like a 2011 model, but the price is just a bit beyond my perceived ability at the moment. The 2010 model hits the sweet spot between capabilities and cost; it meets or exceeds all my anticipated needs.

  • Mac Mini Late 2012 may have been the BEST Mac Mini ever

With it's complete hardware access allowing updates of HD's and Memory, it can turn an already i7 Quadcore powerhouse into a mini super computer. I added a 2 TB Solid State HD to mine. It is REALLY fast and I'm surprised how good the performance of the Intel 4000 video is. With the installed 16GB of RAM, sharing the RAM with the video card is no big deal. Your milage may vary, but I'm very pleased with the 4-year-old computer.
