Excellent communication tool
The ft-8900R transceiver is awesome as long as you understand its designed purpose: a communications tool. It is not designed for DX on HF, or as an entry level mobile. Before purchasing, new hams should understand their license privileges as they relate to the limitations of this transceiver. Particularly that it does not do SSB mode so techs will not be able to use the 6m & 10m bands. However, its cross-band repeat function, along with its rugged construction and reasonably simple operation make it an excellent part of a preppers communication platform during grid-down or remote locations.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned

Setting tones
When setting the tones, its very easy to do if you can understand the instructions because they jump around a bit. My problem is, after setting the tones I dont hear anything on the receive frequency. I can see the meter go up, but no sound. Anyone that wants to help me with this problem can email me. Maybe its a minor problem I dont realize. but I followed the instruction to the letter and still having problems. Too many knobs and buttons it seems. Great 2m and 70cm radio.
I have bought a total of 4 of these radios over the last 2 years. Easy to program even with out the cable and software. They are great either as a base station or mobile application. Great dual band rig, but no dual receive
This rig arrived in like new-in-box condition. It is exactly what I was looking for in a dual band 2m/70cm mobile FM transceiver. Going into you have to realize this rig does not have the dual receive like the old FT-8100 or its replacement the quad-band FT-8900. Easy to program at the rig, so I don't plan to waste $$ on programming interface or software. So far it has been easy to operate. It does have the remote control head feature which I am not using at the moment. Very easy to change power levels, bands, tone on/off, and memory vs. VFO ops. It has the W.I.R.E.S link capability though I have not used it yet. Even though speaker is top mounted, sounds as good in my install as the front-fired model it replaced.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned

LOOK OUT FOR FAKES
After watching a youtube video, and sending in the warranty card....I found out my radio was a cheap fake of the original. Radio works, but is a knock off with inferior parts. Considering it was from China and the hassel of unmounting and wiring, and sending back to China, and the amount of time it takes to get reimbursed, I kept it.
