The Yaesu FT840 is a great rig especially when equipped with optional filters. It's good choice for as a first time rig, for rag chewing, general operation. Clean CW & exceptional phone operation. The receive audio is fantastic even on the built in speaker it provides easy listening arm charm sound. Only thing missing is RF Gain... at times it's good to be able to cut the gain when adjacent frequency signals are extra strong. Otherwise this is an exceptional rig

Great little rig. The radio cover 10m-160m, but can be modded to cover MARS and even CB. It's easy to use, and has no complicated menus. You will have to buy the FM board if you plan on using the 10m FM mode. Also, this radio has awful AM reception unless you use the optional AM filter. The FM board and the AM filter can be found online, but Yaesu no longer makes parts for these radios anymore, so a parts rig might be a good idea.
This TX, yes a bit an older one, but meets all the requirements if you on the air in HF Bands. Selectivity is very good. I find the sound is much better than in newer ones. I work mostly in CW. The filters (standard) is ok for me - no needet more narrow.. Erich HB9FIH HS0ZLS

It is compact, not too heavy, nice and clear display. Power output is very close to what was advertised. It would have been good if it also had 6M!. Receiving it just 2 week ago, don't know if I can program it for 60M on it's memory but can surely do it manually. It is a very nice unit for me. NP3BT.

I have had a Yaesu FT 840 for over ten years. During that time, I used it for HF on the weekends (when not working). It has many outstanding features. I am amazed at how some amateurs compare this with a Kenwood TS 590. Yeasu did not replace this rig with a TS 590 (gee). Further, some amateurs are confused about the 840. It has only one antenna terminal and does not have a separate, dedicated receiving antenna terminal. Further, the 840 has 2 open slots for filters (I put in the 2.4 kHz SSB filter and the 500 Hz CW filter). A slot adjacent to these 2 is for the AM filter. In the middle of this top side of the is the site for the FM board (FM Unit-747). This site is perpendicular to the boards of the top side.. These filters are Yaesu filters as well as the FM board. They simply "drop" into their designated slot. If you are able to find a TCXO-4, you can easily install this on the bottom portion of the 840 and you might as well change the memory battery on the same slide (if it has not been recently changed). I wonder if any amateurs actually "open up" their rigs to see what is inside the rig. Again, an outstanding rig that is made even better with the filters, FM board and the TCXO. Yaesu has a great "winner for HF" in their FT 840. Thank you, Yaesu.Read full review

Good radio for the dollar, but must keep in mind that this rig has been replaced by the TS590 and some parts are hard to obtain if needed. There is only one filter spot so you have to decie if you want cw or ssb. Owned mine over 12 years and never had a problem. Has two receive SO-239 terminals, but no provision for a receive only antenna. Have worked a lot of dx barefoot. Don't let the 20 amp hold you up. I just use a old Radio Shack ps and works fine

THIS 100 WATT TRANSCEIVER WILL COMMUNICATE WORLDWIDE--ESPECIALLY GREAT WITH AUDIO COMPRESSION AND SINGLE SIDEBAND. MOST OF THE CLEVER CHOICES FOR BOTH TRANSMITTING AND RECEIVING ARE INCORPORATED IN THE YAESU FT-840. THE CONSTRUCTION USES TOP OF THE LINE COMPONENTS WITH DESIGN AND QUALITY CONTROL TO MATCH. UNRESERVED RECOMMENDATION.

I do a lot of CW and RTTY. FT-840 is not rated for 100% duty clcle, but with a bit of aux cooling air, it will carry a contesting load.

Been using one for years. Simple to use and well built. A previous reviewer said it can be modified for use on CB channels. Electrically that is correct however it's also against the law to use these radios on CB channels.
