  • Simulates well the range of the traditional tablas and without animal skins

I got these because I really liked my tablas, but found two problems. One was that the tablas had animal skins and my vegan lifestyle has been uncomfortable in compromising in this way. Two is that the animal skins are tough on the hands and I cannot afford to get calluses, I do energy work and body work that needs my fingers to be sensitive. I found these Remo "tablatones" to simulate well the key sounds of the tablas and I am able to play the traditional compositions and ragas with them. The set that I got allowed me even greater range than a traditional tablas. The tunable frame drums allow me to re-tune them to the key of the raga. I had already gotten an 8 inch small one and with this purchase had two 8 inchers. This did not create a redundancy, though, because I could tune them differently and they duplicate the nice "bouncy" sound of the small right hand tabla. I bought stands for all of them (costing as much as the drums), and sit on a cajon and play them. There are special frame drum holders that Remo has, but I do not recommend them, because they only hold at one place and this puts a stress on the drum. I got the snare drum stands and found that they worked very solidly, though the effect of gravity and the three prongs dampened the sound. I re-tuned them so that they would still sound good even when dampened. By accident I found an even better solution. One of the prongs did not hold the 10 inch one and it fell down and got held by the remaining two prongs and the metal of the last prong. Held this way, it was sturdier than the frame drum holder, yet loose enough to not dampen the sound. I later improved the hold by putting some black duct tape on the open prong so that there would be more friction and that edge of the frame drum would not be in contact with the metal. I imagine that some snare drum holders may also need a small bump of some kind, like some extra tape wrapped to become a kind of notch or bump to hold the drum on the third and lowest prong (the one facing the drummer). In any case, these tablatones do simulate the tablas and more, and have opened me to exploring the possibilities of tunable frame drums.
