  • Poignant telling of a tragedy

This film’s opening sequence and the score are both atmospheric and gripping. the movie starts with actual newsreel footage and voice narration highlighting the drama, excitement and charm surrounding the Titanic’s maiden voyage. Opening credits scroll through a field of ice while the score makes you feel the weight and power of the ice field. While the film has some dates and locations, it inaccurately lists the day of the sinking. We follow characters in all three classes with significant dialog highlighting the extreme separation between them. In particular Lawrence beesely (2nd class survivor) and a fictitious female 2nd class teacher character discuss the differences from the middle. These observations form an overtone for how the disaster plays out that highlights how human life was made to suffer despite the white star line’s protocols and emergency response procedures which are executed with earnestness. The treatment of the third class is hard to watch and the absurdity of the attempts to thwart their chances of survival are major themes present throughout the sinking. To me, the focus on the radio operator transmissions is exceptionally well done and incredibly engaging, and the life boat rescue by Carpathia gets to me every time. My biggest criticism is the portrayal of J Astor and especially Molly Brown who is depicted as oafish and cast as comedic relief… until she gets in the lifeboat, but still, didn’t like the portrayal of her at all.

  • The memorable story of Titanic's tragic maiden voyage with a first-rate cast!

I have awaited the release of the original television version of "S.O.S. Titanic" for years, because of the additional scenes and more detailed storyline depicting the great ship's final moments! Granted, a lot of the footage of the Titanic, herself, has been colorized and borrowed for this film, but there are certain scenes showing the ship off the coast of Queenstown (Cobh), Ireland, or striking the infamous iceberg, firing her distress rockets and though the 'on-board ' sets aren't historically accurate, the manner of which the story is played out is nonetheless intriguing and follows some of the actual events that transpired during the late hours of April 14-15, 1912 with respectability. It is the first color film dealing with the Titanic tragedy, and though somewhat dated by today's standards of movie magic, it does manage to weave its spell in an entertaining fashion. As a made-for-television movie, it is, altogether, well done and a must -have for any Titanic aficionado's film library! I'm definitely glad to have it in mine!

  • Don’t bother

Of all the Titanic movies, it is the absolute worst one ever made. Well known cast but poorly written and bears no resemblance to what happened on board except it sank!
