Andrea Camillieri’s Montalbano is a fully rounded, attractive, intelligent and very human detective hero. I watched and re-watched all the TV adaptations of this character and then did the same with the prequel series The Young Montalbano, all of which are superb. Then I began reading the books, even those whose adaptations I’d watched. The supporting characters are all well drawn. Amongst these are the madly womanizing Mimi Augello, Montalbano’s deputy, the fiercely loyal inspector Giuseppe Fazio, and the clownish policeman Catarella, who can never get peoples’ names right as often as he slips and bangs his boss’s office door. Sicily emerges as a colorful, complex island, beautiful and rugged and very appealing. Equally attractive is the food Montalbano eats. Fish is top of the menu, and as a result I started eating more of it myself! The books are easy to read and very immersive and I highly recommend them. Read full review
