keeps up the dramatic pace and allows the undercurrents to breathe
This is a wonderfully theatrical performance, with wonderful singers and conductor. What makes it that bit special? Well, I think it has much to do with the dramatic pace that Abbado keeps up; and also his ability through little touches to bring out the melancholic aspects of the score - most of the greatest works of Mozart have that underlying streak of sadness even in the midst of what is happy. The best performers manage to convey both at the same time.
