Its 0.9 to 0.3 density creates a darkening of the entire image that is graduated, allowing you to suppress specific areas of an image such as very bright skies, while providing a similar, but reduced effect in other regions of the image that can benefit from a more moderate reduction in exposure, such as reflecting water or sand.
