This is a really good book for all beginners and experienced devotees of cryptic crosswords. There are sections for novices on how to set about doing a cryptic crossword, and on all the different types of cryptic clues which might be used, so you can look out for them. Then there are all the pages of synonyms for words, of course, which are invaluable to me now, because pain medication has eradicated my own memory cells, so the words which used to come straight into my mind just aren't there now, and I need to be reminded of them. There are also useful lists of, e.g, names of politicians, poets and theologians, rivers, lochs and lakes, types of horses and ponies and even flies, names of various torture instruments and types of lab equipment... it just goes on and on, so this companion book is fascinating for lovers of words generally, even if you don't particularly want to do cryptic crosswords. I actually have 2 copies of this book now, so I can keep one downstairs and one upstairs. (I might even buy one for my car, next!) I think every home should have at least one copy, though, so you should buy one quickly, before I own them all!Read full review
