It is important to know that this is a cut down production by the BBC's Education dept. That is to say the acting is good and to the point rather than the big expensive productions (Little Dorrit, Bleak House, etc.) for which the BBC are famous. It is also hard to buy in the UK for some reason... that is unless you can play US region 1 DVDs or as I did purchase a region 2 copy from a Dutch source... which is perfectly OK as it's an English language production. A useful addition to a Dickens collection.

Unfortunately even though the DVD is new the picture colour is showing it's age. The characters are not engaging but then again they're not meant to be, the whole story is typical of Dickens and the differences between the classes.

This adaptation of Charles Dickens' novel was made for BBC Schools viewers, but adults can enjoy watching it too. The budget clearly wasn't huge, but the acting is first class. I was so impressed by the cast - Bob Peck, Richard E. Grant, Alan Bates, Beatie Edney, Harriet Walter and more. The DVD itself looks well made and didn't skip. It seems to be quite a rare find.

Needed this for OU studies. Very good production and ticks all the right boxes for students and Dickens fans.
