Dull stories, language too complex for early reading.
These books fail to provide useful phonics practice in an interesting context. The stories are banal and only suitable for very young children, if at all; but the reading requires knowledge of many of the phonemes taught up to the end of year 1. This means that only competent six-year-olds would be able to read the words, and they are unlikely to find the content interesting.
