  • Brain Games for Dogs

The Nina Ottosson puzzle toys are great for dogs. They teach dogs how to think, how to manage and overcome frustration, how to process information, and keep dogs' brains in cognitive "good shape." I suggest starting with some of the easier puzzles, as this Twister one is more difficult than some of the others and would be considered more advanced as the puzzle is a two-step process. Start with an Ottosson puzzle that takes on e step to solve; that is, the dog removes or moves only one item rather than two in order to get a treat. You can work up to more difficult puzzles. These are great for use on rainy, snowy, or too hot days. They are also great for older dogs who may have arthritis and cat exercise as much as they could when they were younger, but who still need and want to use their brain. With the more difficult toys, you may have to show the dog a few times how to "solve" the puzzle. Don't be put off by a dog who seems frustrated at first. It is a good idea to let the dog work through the frustration and learn to manage it. However, if you feel your dog is becoming too frustrated, give him/her a break, show the dog how to solve the puzzle, and try again when the dog is calmer. Another option is allowing a dog for whom the puzzle is new to watch a dog who knows how to solve the puzzle do so (from a safe distance - beware of doing so with resource guarders or dogs who are very reactive to movement and/or who may have low frustration levels).
