The Marshall Class 5 is a great little amp. It's much louder than you'd expect for a 5 watt combo louder than my 70s vibro champ. The version I have has a switch on the back with lowers the wattage to 1 watt (I believe it's 1 watt) and is much more manageable for practice and bedroom volumes. I keep the volume around 5 and get a nice mild overdriven sound, which I can clean up by turning the volume down on my guitar. For more crunch, I boost the amp with a klon type pedal or a blues driver. It is very bass heavy, so I turn the bass control down to about 2, keep the mids around 5 and the treble at 9. Volume ranges from 4-6 depending on if my neighbors are home. I also add a little delay or reverb for ambiance. Overall, It's a great amp for what I do- blues and classic rock tones. It's not probably the best amp for metal sounds without a pedal, but it has great classic 60's marshall tone, which I love!Read full review

Great grab-and-go amp. Mine is the last version with the 3-pc back and the low-volume switch. Watch for earlier versions that had issues with rattling; they made several upgrades to eliminate the original's cabinet noise. This is loud for 5 watts! I'm using it for rehearsals in a four-piece band and haven't needed to turn it up past 3. I'm considering taking it out to a gig and hooking it up next to my Blackstar HT Club 40 to see if, when set to "11", it can keep up at the stage volume we use (mic'd). At lower volume, I like it with some OD/Distortion pedals. I've tried a Plush Extreme Cream, a Boss SD-1 and Seymour Duncan's Twin Tube Classic and it has taken all very well. I have a used T-Rex Fat Shuga on the way to see if I can use it as an amp-top effect to dial in the crunch I want at the volume level we rehearse, controlling clean, crunch rhythm and solos with my Les Paul Custom's volume knobs, only - no other pedals. This amp DOES NOT have a Master Volume nor Reverb, so I'm hoping the Fat Shuga will act as a OD/Gain control and can add a little atmosphere with it's built-in reverb. I had a Marshall stack in the 70's and a 50-watt tube combo in the 80's, but nowadays I can appreciate a mini-Marshall that is easy to lift and fits anywhere. Check the Marshall and Les Paul forums - and YouTube, as well, for some mods that people are making to the circuit to get the sound optimized and closer to the traditional Marshall tones.Read full review
My class 5 is everything I wanted in terms of tone and portability. Marshall should have made room for a twelve inch speaker and added reverb. An 8 ohm or 16 ohm speaker output option would have been great too! The vintage sounds are all there and the amp is worth every dime I paid. Loud enough for jamming too.

It is a good quality amplifier and is well built. You have to fine tune the controls carefully, adjusting them in order to get a clean sound; mostly by keeping the midrange and bass controls at low settings. Very good pure Marshall distortion when cranked. Small beast.
Think Led Zeppelin, Free, Cream, Bad Company, the Who, Deep Purple, etc. This amp is old school rock and gets the job done. I love it!

This is a one trick pony. But he plays his trick very very well. The vintage tone is awesome. Although there is no master volume, but there is a power switch that you can use in your apartment.
Great for the home or a small venue and it produces a warm tube driven sound...
