Osmo Polyx®-Oils are developed from natural oils and waxes to provide the most hardwearing and durable protection for wooden flooring and furniture. Untreated wood in its original form has a light, pale character from its natural 'raw' appearance.
I used it to treat some shelves made from very old dark oak. I wanted a modern finish and other varnishes & oils I tried always darkened the wood even more and produced quite a sheen.
This oil however gave a good full matt finish and because it contains some kind of white pigment kept the wood from going dark. I had to be very careful not to apply the oil too thickly otherwise it would end up streaked with white. I actually applied the oil thinly with a normal paint brush then rolled it over with a dry paint roller (fitted with a foam roller) I repeated this for 3 coats.
I only needed the 125ml tin to treat 2 oak shelves each 700mm (l) x 240mm(w) and still had half the tin left.
Even so it was pretty expensive for such a small tin.
Osmo Polyx Hardwax Oil 3044 Natural Matt Raw - Poor results.
The image attached is a comparrison between the same piece of timber with the Osmo Polyx Hardwax Oil 3044 Natural Matt Raw on the left and a clear matt varnish on the right. The veneer swatch also in shot against the matt finish.
Clearly the Polyx has greyed down the finish compared to the clear finish. The finish of the Polyx
makes the veneer unrecognizable when comparing the veneer with the original.
