German Quality Part
My wife was complaining of a 'clunking' noise emanating from the front suspension on her 2003 Volvo S80. After reading the various forums we decided that there was a problem with the strut top mounting. The top mount could also be seen moving back and forth when the car was driven. There are many makes of top mount available now we live in a digital age. After a bit of research I decided that OEM parts would do as well as Volvo branded parts and were about £35 cheaper. Please note that this is a 2 part mount so both parts need purchasing. The mounts seem common to a range of older Volvos inc 850 / V70 / S60 & 80. The Lemforder range had the best write-ups (in USA) and the added bonus was they were Made in Germany. Cheaper parts can be obtained but most seem to be Chinese! Fitting was easy after I had purchased a quality (expensive) Canvik spring compressor/safety cage. On removal of the old parts it was obvious that they had collapsed and rusted through. As I am a bit of a perfectionist, I also fitted all new genuine Volvo nuts/bolts and obtained the correct Volvo tool to tighten up the star nut just below these mounts. The total price for the 2 part mounts/genuine bolts came to about £100 per side. There are many videos on the internet to see how this is done. I would also suggest a printed diagram of the sequence of nuts / fittings on the strut to ensure correct replacement. The biggest problem was un-doing the strut to hub & drop arm nuts that took me hours of struggle as they had not been removed before. Even my 1/2" air wrench would not undo them and I resorted to destroying the nuts with a splitter and using a breaker bar/impact socket on the bolt. They obviously do not use salt on the roads in the parts of the US where these videos were filmed! Since fitment the 'clunking' has gone but as the decay in the old rubber mount was severe I will now replace the nearside mount. Needless to say, I have already bought Lemforder parts again. The retailer seemed very conscientious in that they also phoned me to ensure I was ordering the correct parts.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New
