Just install a new pair of batteries and it will work fine. This model's firmware can be upgraded up to version 7.1, so it will not support the modbus mode in apcupsd. It is recognized fine by usb mode with the a usb cable though, giving some basic information, but most importantly powering off the system when battery level reaches a certain (configurable) level. Only tried it on a GNU Linux system with apcupsd, but I suppose it works perfectly on a MS Windows system as well.

I bought my first APC device a Back-Up Pro 650 in 1996 and is still working well today with only two battery changes so far! The APC Smart-UPS 750VA (new lcd display type) I recently bid ,has an attractive LCD display that aesthetically looks good next to my other HiFi electronic devices and blends well with the décor of the room. It's also it’s the second unit of identical design that I purchased a year ago. In total I have seven APC UPS systems ranging from 650VA to 3000VA in power. I used them to provided direct power for my remote control roll-up garage door, Internet broadband router, Wireless land-line telephone system and of course computers, a WiFi printer, fax machine and a couple of large screen LCD TV’s, a DVD Player and more — some devices are not supposed to be used with UPS units — but I have never experienced any issues. I’m now a fully fledged UPS convert and apply APC systems to other electrical devices than “the computer” as it was during a power failure and using a laptop, I discovered whilst bidding on eBay, I lost connection to my broadband router and the chance to bid for a bargain!Read full review
