I first found out about these around 18 years ago, I wouldn't be without one now. If you want to remove a lot of material quickly this is the thing to use. But also, with a little finesse, it's possible to work close to a line and finish with an abrasive.

I bought this to help with guitar building and it is excellent for removing wood quickly before you get down to the fine work. It has both finer and coarse sides. If you are in the habit of resting your hand on top of rasps or files, better wear gloves as both the top and bottom surfaces are sharp.
