About this product

Product Information

Orwell's dystopian masterpiece, in a stunning new cover look for his great works 'Who controls the past controls the future- who controls the present controls the past' Hidden away in the Record Department of the sprawling Ministry of Truth, Winston Smith skilfully rewrites the past to suit the needs of the Party. Yet he inwardly rebels against the totalitarian world he lives in, which demands absolute obedience and controls him through the all-seeing telescreens and the watchful eye of Big Brother, symbolic head of the Party. In his longing for truth and liberty, Smith begins a secret love affair with a fellow-worker Julia, but soon discovers the true price of freedom is betrayal.

  • More relevant than ever

This book so clearly demonstrates dystopia. It does so iconically, so no surprises there for anyone who's heard of the book. The world at the moment, or maybe it's just more obvious now, has many of the roots of such a dystopia. However, not from the where you think. The foundation of democracy is under siege, I may sound melodramatic, but when there are groups calling for the nullification of votes. Demanding that revotes be performed, or simply labelling those who voted one way as all doing so for one reason (a usually nefarious one). Dystopias never start as a dystopia. The road to evil is paved with good intentions. Liberty is absolute, and at the risk of this review becoming a series of quotes, those who trade liberty for security deserve neither. I try not to go into details purely because it would ruin it for the reader.
