A reliable 24 track hard disk recorder with great sound quality
If your looking for a quality hard disk multi-track recorder for use with an existing mixing desk, and prefer that sort of setup to a computer DAW system, then look no further. Alesis really created something special here, 24 tracks on cheap media and easy to use. You can set plenty of locate points and access times are really fast due to their propriety formatting system. Punch in and out is supported along with the ability to loop between user selected positions. The only downside is the editing facilities are basic compared to a DAW, but copy, cut and paste are available. There are individual analog inputs and outputs for all 24 tracks as well as ADAT digital I/O. It has Midi in out sockets and supports MTC for syncing external midi recorders etc.
With a long reputation of being very reliable, unlike their previous ADAT tape system, get one in good condition that's been well looked after and you'll probably not want for anything else. PDF copies of the manual are easily obtained online.
Ensure you use one with two hard drives, as it's always a good idea to have one to back up your recordings to, hard drives do fail sometimes! Also ensure you get a machine with the plugin remote unit included, as it's extremely useful.
One hours recording of 24 tracks will use approximately 10GB of space if you need to work out how much recording time you'll get for any given drive size.
