Keeps spattering to a minimum.
The two-piece shield fits all the way around my 5-quart bowl. It helps keep spattering to a minimum and use it whenever spattering is likely. It cleans easily in the dishwasher, though I expect that the plastic will become scratched and hazy through this cleaning over time. However, that will not affect the product's functionality.
