    Cheap, reliable and works well

I used this to repair a stripped spark plug thread on a mower. There are no instructions with the kit but it is straightforward to use. I attached a socket set T bar to the hex end to give extra stability and held the head in a vice. It initially reams out the old thread and for me this needed me to back the tool out a few times as it bit into the aluminium head. Once it starts to cut the new thread it is easier. I used the smallest insert - they are not helicoil type, they are timesert type - which I had to shorten by grinding down slightly on a bench grinder. I used Loctite 272 (good for 200C which is way over what a head gets up to) to threadlock the insert in place and fed in the insert by hand. You could use a sparkplug but any threadlocker on the inside of the insert and you are in trouble. Left it for 24h then put it all back together again, started first pull and mowed for an hour - all seems OK

    Not impressed

The idea is the tap cuts a new thread into the spark plug port. With this, all of the thread came off the tap, even with plenty of grease and back turns. Was only an Ali 2 stroke head. In the end, I used a different tap and put in the insert. As soon as I put the plug in, the insert shredded.

  • Saved my trusty lawn mower

A quick search found this product. Easy to use and made a good repair, preventing an old but good working lawn mower from being condemned when cylinder head plug thread stripped.

  • M14 spark plug repair kit.

These are threaded sleeves rather than a helicoil repair so will repair a spark plug hole that has been severely damaged. You will need to remove the head unless access is clear and you have some means of removing the swarf that falls into the cylinder.

Good product, but could be nearer a No2 for a full re-threading. Did the job well

  • Helicoil

Perfect size, whole kit did the spark repair hole nicely. Car running well.

Does exactly what it says it will, without the need to pay for a very expensive helicoil special tool.
