The sponge that comes with the original VMPR+ Mic does a little, in reality however, fitting the properly designed deadcat will make your mic pretty much immune to most windy days, it does this with LONG hair that fly in the wind and absorb the higher pitched sound vibrations. The hairs that form the faux fur are rooted onto the exterior of a rubber tube that in turn absorbs the lower frequencies, in turn the inner part of the rubber tube is dimpled so as to have a snug fit but with minimal contact - effectively a mini-blimp, best of both worlds! All in all a very clever design that has been developed clearly with an eye to reduce the acquisition costs of blimps and and to make these powerful mics as effective as traditional versions in blimps. So, BEFORE you gripe (like I did for two years) about the £39 approx price, remember that it is well engineered piece of kit and has been designed to make life easier and cheaper for the end user.Read full review

Because this is dedicated to the Rode mic and has a rubber gasket at the back, it is quite expensive. The gasket makes a seal over the back of the mic just like the fiamie. However, it works well and looks great. It rejects wind well without affecting the sound of the mic too much. So I guess you do get what you pay for ......
