  • A worthy member of the 'Tough' family

The Olympus 'Tough' series has been around for a long time and has set the standard for medium-priced 'sports' type cameras. The one I had before this, which gave good service for about six years, was the TG-820. In use and in most technical aspects this one is very little different. They have the same 12-megapixel sensor giving very good image quality, and both work well underwater down to their rated depth (which can be extended a little bit). The HD video, including the sound, is fine. This one however includes a GPS facility, which I don't need and have switched off to extend battery life. I usually know roughly where I am. The waterproof door on the battery compartment is better designed on the TG2, and very unlikely to be opened accidentally underwater, but there are two waterproof hatches instead of the one on the 820, doubling your chances of forgetting to secure one of them properly. Also the metal cover which pops out to protect the lens when the camera is off on the 820 isn't included, leaving the glasswork a little less protected. But overall, the camera, like its predecessors, does a great job and is as near indestructible as makes no difference. I would recommend it highly.
