  • Excellent block plane easy to use and adjust; producing great results

I bought this 69 1/2 low angle block plane as 'factory seconds' expecting to have to fettle but only needed to put an edge on the blade - which is normal for any cutting tool. A previous Axminster Rider 'seconds' plane I had purchased had a small amount of rough casting to file off (no more than a couple of minutes work) Once sharpened I tested it on the end grain of a piece of timber I knew to be problematic but this little gem went through it like a knife through butter. It also left a beautifully clean smooth finish, The plane sits comfortably in the hand and has the right 'heft' for working comfortably and easily. Adjustment is easy and smooth and I have used it for a number of tasks such as finishing dovetail joints. It is always a joy to use and produces excellent results. All in all a cracking little plane and as a 'seconds' has been excellent value for money. If you are wary of possible fettling, I would say the 'First Quality' one is still well worth the money,

  • Nice low angle plane

I have had nothing but trouble with my previous low angle 60 1/2 from another manufacturer. The blade steel was terrible and the edge used to crumble regularly. After re-hardening it in my forge performance was slightly better but the blade would still chip or crumble frequently. A back bevel helped slightly, but not a great deal. The plane blade on this 69 1/2 is excellent, and I now understand why low angle planes are becoming popular. It does a lovely job with end grain, and is just big and heavy enough to use on a shooting board with small workpieces. Mine was bought half price as a factory second, but I find it hard to find any cosmetic fault. The only fault I can find is a miniscule chip in the top of the blade about 1/2 an inch from the cutting edge. I suppose in about 30 years of sharpening it might become an issue, but I always round the corners on the blade so it will probably be insignificant when I reach it anyway. I put a 90 degree angle on my old low angle plane blade and use it like a scraper now, usually on changing grain around knots. At least it serves some purpose and the 2mm thick edge doesn't crumble. The 69 1/2 has been perfect so far, the blade keeps an edge well and the extra weight helps when using it on a shooting board. The blade sits well on the seating at the mouth of the plane so no problems with chatter have been experienced. This is the second Rider plane I have purchased, the other being a no 90 bullnose. My larger planes are pre-1960 Record or Stanley, and I find the Riders have comparable build quality. I would definitely recommend this to someone looking for a low angle block plane. .

  • Needs a bit of setting up, but good value

This plane is said to be ready to take shavings. That's so, but its performance out of the box need some refining before you would want to use it to work with. As well as sharpening, I needed to flatten the sole, particularly by the mouth. I also went around the castings with a diamond pad to take off the rough edges and sharp corners. However, this fettling having been done, I now have a first rate plane at a reasonable price.

  • Great intrinsic quality...

...but of course, like every plane I've ever bought, be it new or used, Record, Stanley etc., it needs quite a bit of setting up. The base needed flattening on a few sheets of abrasive paper, which is fairly typical, but a pain, and the blade needed sharpening properly. Surprisingly though, the blade couldn't be straightened AT ALL with the side to side adjustment, and after close examination I realised that it couldn't be straightened because the slope onto which the blade sits was on the piss, and I needed to file it extensively on one spot of cast iron to get the plane blade to sit at a neutral angle, so that the side to side adjustment would have a full range of effect. Pain in the arse to do, and took over an hour, but now I have a beautiful low angle block plane at a bargain price. Well worth it if you can be bothered to set it up. Very heavy build, great brass frog and a great blade too actually. Sets up lovely!

  • Rider block plane

Been disssapointed with quality of a lot of mainstream manufacturers quality I had tried one of the rider planes out in Axminster store very impressed I purchased this one as a second the only floor I could find was the brass blade cap was drilled off 90 degrees it hasn't impacted planes performance been using it for a few weeks it's really good used on oak, pine, mdf and it works perfectly the heavy weight seems to stop any plane chatter very pleased

  • Very good

Has a good weight to it, blade took quiet a while to sharpen as the edge wasn’t as square as you might expect from a new tool. But the tool itself is very good
