Fiction Becomes Reality
Unbelievable in so many ways, yet this was a stark reality for the German People in 1934. Not surprisingly, Triumph of the Will was funded entirely by the Nazi Party, but it’s interesting to note that it was directed by a young woman named Leni Riefenstahl. Although somewhat redundant in its imagery (probably intentionally so), it sends a very clear message: Let us restore national pride, while solidifying the country under one leadership. It’s a cleverly orchestrated piece of propaganda. Logic and diplomacy were never at stake. The speakers hurl their words at the hearts of their listeners, in order to invoke a pure emotional response. You might notice a sort of rapturous delirium taking place amongst the onlookers. It’s in their eyes.
No individual can be blamed or take credit for what transpired. The timing, the characters, the chain of events, and perhaps something else unforeseen contributed to the phenomenon. Whatever the case may be, an entire nation was mesmerized and manipulated on a scale never before seen. Films like this would have been produced long before, had ancient Rome possessed the ability to make movies.
