Doesn’t work for UKchildren
I was hoping to use this with children for the rhyming, but the language isn’t suitable. It’s basically an ‘amusing’ picture book based on forced rhyme. It was first published in New Zealand where, I assume, the language is used differently (ditto Australia) but it isn’t suitable for UK children. Using “wonky” in the context of a prosthetic leg isn’t a good start, then showing a bird carrying his missing eye is fairly horrific for “winky”. I can only imagine the barrage of questions that would follow this image! “Honky-Tonky” means nothing to children, so that doesn’t work at all. If you have to give in-depth explanations to explain the ‘joke’, it falls flat. “Lanky” is all well and good, but not when you’re trying to build self-esteem and avoid labels based on appearance. They have enough of that to deal with. I know children and adolescents love fart jokes (“stinky-dinky”) but it would cause so much distraction, it wouldn’t be worth it. “Hanky-panky” is used to describe “getting up to mischief”, but In the UK, it’s much more associated with sexual shenanigans, so inappropriate. The same goes for “spunky”, which may be used in New Zealand to mean “good looking”, but is not in common use here and is, again, quite sexualised. Shame. ‘Hee Haw’some fun from beginning to end
Bought this for my 2 year old grandson. Such a wonderful book to share with a child of any age. Repetitive story lines are great for little ones to catch on to the story. You just can’t help laughing. The book is beautifully illustrated and fabulous quality which is just as well as I have a feeling this will get lots and lots of use. The Wonky Donky
I Bought this for my granddaughter for her 5th birthday and she loves it. Good size and artistic work was great, it captured my granddaughters attention and kept her focused on the story. The wording is large which is good for her to recognise letters, she now practically knows the story by heart. My Granddaughter is going to love it 😂
Turned my Granddaughter on to Wonkey Donkey 6months ago (much to her mothers horror) and she asks for the YouTube video all the time. Always calms her down when having a tantrum (terrible twos). Been waiting for her birthday to get the book version for her as she loves having story time. Amazingly funny story
I know one or two poor reviews have been about the price, I’m not one of them, I paid £3.94 & got a cd with the song on with one of the books & a download link with the other, but better than that, I got a lot of laughter from some seriously entertained youngsters who tried to join in on every single page of this book. Poor little Donkey
This was really liked by my Grand daughters, they were quite worried about this poor donkey. The have asked for this to be read, every night, they will know it by heart.
